Payroll Specialist

Working as part of the Finance team, and reporting to the Payroll Manager, the Payroll Specialist will assist in processing and distributing payrolls for 800 + employees.
  • Accurately and efficiently process payroll, which will require understanding large system payroll
  • Review payroll transactions for completeness and reasonability
  • Research and investigate payroll discrepancies
  • Prepare special payments, complex pay and payroll deduction calculations
  • Support and assist with payroll procedures and internal audits, ensuring payroll processes are in line with controls
  • Respond to information requests and assist in the implementation of key initiatives impacting payroll, including acquisitions of new assets/employees
  • Stay abreast and aware of new laws and regulations regarding payroll related issues
  • Assist in identifying recurring issues, problematic trends, and in recommending changes in basic procedures
  • Strong organizational skills with the ability to manage a large number of prioritizes while working under tight deadlines
  • Flexible and adaptable: willing and able to change priorities to meet team goals
  • Strong analytical skills, attention to detail and sound judgment
  • Motivated problem solver with the ability to sort through issues to create and recommend improvements
  • Strong interpersonal skills to foster strong relationships at all levels in the organization
  • Ability to deal sensitively with confidential information
  • Strong oral and written communication skills
  • Ultimate Software and SAP software experience considered an asset or any large payroll system experience

  • Bachelor’ s degree in Business Administration or equivalent work experience; payroll certification is preferred
  • Minimum of four (4) years of payroll experience covering all aspects of payroll processing, with at least three (3) years in a comparably complex company required
  • Understanding of collective agreement applications for payroll preferred
  • Expert use of Microsoft applications (Outlook, Word, and Excel) required
